My Educational Philosophy

There are important social and personal reasons why our society invests large resources into the education of children. I believe that the purposes of education are numerous. In my eyes, the main reason for education is for children's success. It is vital for children to be educated in life, so they can succeed in the future. It is impossible for a child to succeed without ever having received a formal education. In schools, children are educated in an array of subjects. Education also prepares students, for the real world. Being given an education, children in the future will be independent thinkers. This in turn will lead them to be effective individuals. Having effective, self;thinkers, will allow the future United States to prosper.

An education exposes students, children especially, to things they need to know as adults, so that they, in the future, can make effective life decisions. For example, many students are educated about different religions, jobs, family and lifestyles. Being educated about all of this, allows them to make their own decisions, about what they want for their future lifestyle. Having consequences in the classroom when misbehaving, such as loss of recess will also help the child to later in life, make more effective decisions. As B.F. Skinner had stated. Behavior is shaped by consequences. Being able to make important life decisions for themselves, will help them be better members in their families, work environment and community. This would allow them to be the best adult they could be.

All children have basic needs that must be met if they are to grow and learn at their best. As a teacher, some of these basic needs that I can address are physical and emotional needs. Physically, I could help students with fine and gross motor skills. These needs cannot be met over night. The children need repetitive practice to help them develop these motor skills. There are many activities I could do with my future students to help them develop fine motor skills. For example, I could have them cut from paper such as a corner from a piece of paper. They could match shapes, colors or pictures to a page and paste them on. During play time, I could even have the students play dress up. Much like the famous philosopher Friedrich Froebel, I believe play is essential to the development of any child. They must learn by doing. They could practice zipping, buttoning, lacing, tying, and fastening snaps to their dress-up clothes. Another example, of an activity that will help children increase their find motor skills is creating artwork. Similar to famous philosopher Reggio Emilia, I believe it is important to have the children create artwork. Using markers, paints, pencils and crayons will help children advance their fine motor skills. To help my students develop their gross motor skills, the movement of larger muscles of their body, I could actively be involved with them during recess and lead active, outdoor activities. I could promote running, climbing, hopping and ball playing. Not only do children need physical well-being, they also need a healthy mental well being.

I will provide emotional support for all of my students! I understand that being a child can be a complex, confusing and frustrating time. Children have different perceptions of situations, than do many adults. They do not understand what is always going on. I understand this from a first hand perspective. When I was a young child, a few months shy of nine years old, my father was the victim of a hit-and-run car accident. His injuries were severe. As a result of his accident, he was paralyzed from the waste down. At first, I did not understand what had happened. Luckily at the time, I had a teacher who was there to listen to me. She provided a listening ear. This is exactly the type of teacher I want to be, in the future. One that will provide a listening ear to my students, whenever they may need it. There are many situations where a child may need emotional support. If they get in a fight with a friend, experience a divorce in their family, a death in their family, sickness, or if they have witnessed or been the victim of abuse. These are only a few of the many situations when a child may need extra emotional support.

I believe that children learn best when they are taught under certain conditions and in certain ways. As a teacher I want the physical, social and cognitive environment where my students learn to include an array of items, ideas and concepts, so all students feel safe and secure, to actively learn, with their peers. As a future teacher, I want to make sure that my classroom is safe, clean, comfortable and attractive. I believe this will stimulate all the minds of my future students. I will effectively design a classroom so all of my students could learn and feel free to speak. First, I will access the classroom including the space, furniture etc, to make the classroom designed effectively. Similar to Dave Weikart's philosophy, my classroom will be organized. I will get storage containers, cubbies, and bins to help organize the classroom. The materials students use often, or even daily, will be arranged in a way that is accessible to them. It will be impossible, for the children to learn in clutter. Clutter would prevent children to be interested in learning. As famous philosopher John Dewey believes, children must be interest in learning. There will also be pathways throughout the room, such as to the trashcans, puzzles, pencil sharpener, etc. Having the classroom designed in this way, would make the child more interested in the material being learned, because he/she would not focus on the clutter. I will then decorate the walls. I will also encourage the children, help to decorate the wall space. Colorful walls will draw the children into my classroom. I will have interesting and attractive visual aids on my wall, such as bulletin boards and posters. Also, I will take into fact that the students may come from different cultural backgrounds. I believe it is extremely important to have displayed on the walls in my future classroom, not only the students work, but my personal achievements as well. For example, when I get my teacher certification and or my college diploma. Even pictures of my future family I could post on my walls. This is extremely important, so the children understand the fact that I worked hard to achieve my dream of being a teacher. This in turn may help them to work hard towards their future dreams. I will incorporate all of these components when decorating my classroom walls. I am also going to use a variety of colors and textures to create a pleasing, calm and peaceful environment. It is vital for my future classroom to comply with all safety standards. Although I believe it is extremely important for my students to learn in an effective learning environment, it is a necessity for my classroom to comply with all safety standards for fire, earthquakes and other emergency situations. As Morrison, the author of our text states, it is a CDA competency goal to;establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment; I believe that the physical environment is extremely important to both the learning and teaching.

The curriculum (the content, attitudes and values that schools intent to teach children) should include certain components that contribute to children's social, emotional, intellectual and physical development. These curriculum components include reading, writing, learning life skills and becoming an independent self-thinker. Reading is extremely important. Reading is key to all successful learning. Students, who develop good reading habits, tend to be more successful in school. Not only are they successful in school, they have a positive outlook towards both reading and learning. Writing is also vital in the success of children. Writing is a major component, to communicating with others. Students will always have to write. As they grow older, the demand of both reading and writing will only increase. Learning life skills in the classroom can help children succeed outside of the classroom. Basic life skills can include washing dishes, during dramatic play, locking and unlocking doors, practicing dressing with costumes, etc. Similar to Maria Montessori, I believe it is important to allow the students to have active learning with individualized instruction. It is vital for students to have independence when learning. Independent learning promotes self-thinking, reflection and develops problem-solving skills.

A teacher should have certain qualities and behave in certain ways. Qualities that I think are important for teaching are patience, kindness, caring and being highly organized. They also should be flexible, insightful, knowledgeable and have good communication skills. A teacher should also have a sense of humor and ultimately be a child at heart. These qualities make up the personal dimension of a successful teacher. A concept from the Morrison text states, a good teacher should also have their own philosophy of education. These are rules, guidelines and beliefs; they believe make a good teacher. It is a necessity for all teachers to have a philosophy of education. These are their rules of teaching that they lived by. This is important, so the students understand where their teachers stand on different situations, and what some of their views and beliefs are. A good teacher is also observant. They will observe when a child is sad, frustrated, needs help, or is having problems with a peer or having issues at home. Good teachers will lead their students to success.

Teachers can also be leaders and advocates who can do much to improve circumstances for their students, schools, families and communities, and for the teaching profession. Teachers lead and advocate when they start new programs, dedicate themselves to a cause and help the community to prosper. A good advocate should also be persistent, relentless, and dedicated. They should be willing to make a difference not only in the town the may live in, but in the life of a child. Teachers are extremely important people. When they see a change that needs to be made in the classroom, school district or town they live in, they should have the initiative that drive and force from within to make the necessary change.

Teachers are amazing, intellectual, irreplaceable people. They make a huge impact in the lives of many children. Without them, it would be impossible to educate our children.
